Classic Tanzania

DAY 1
ARUSHA
Upon arrival into Kilimanjaro you are met and transferred to the lodge which was built on a working coffee plantation. Each room features its own balcony providing spectacular views of Mount Meru and the coffee plantation.

Days 2-4
GRUMETI RESERVE
On the morning of Day 2 you are flown to the Grumeti Reserve and your luxury tented camp. The Grumeti Reserve is located adjacent to the Western Corridor of the Serengeti, bordering the national park, and encompassing 340,000 acres of unrivalled wilderness. The area forms part of the famous migratory route which is travelled by hundreds of thousands of animals every year.

The camp is situated on the Serengeti plains and is beautifully decorated in grand campaign 1920s style. The six lavish tents are air-conditioned and feature a bedroom and reading area, bathroom with bath and outdoor shower, viewing deck with your own spotting scope, and a library lounge tent.

Game drives and walks can be enjoyed with professional guides. Other activities include archery, lawn croquet, mountain biking, equestrian pursuits, and hot air ballooning. Exclusivity promises thrilling game viewing in classic vintage cars or open four-wheel drive vehicles. You may also explore the great Serengeti savannah, riverine and montane habitats by walking, cycling or horse riding accompanied by professional guides.

Day 5
NGORONGORO CRATER
This morning you are flown to Tanzania's famous Ngorongoro Crater and your accommodation perched on the edge of the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater at the eastern edge of the Serengeti in northern Tanzania.

The Crater was once a gigantic volcano, perhaps taller than Kilimanjaro. When the volcano collapsed, a vast bowl known as a caldera was formed, measuring about 11 miles across, with a depth of some 2000 feet and 102 sq miles of crater floor. It is one of the most perfectly formed - and certainly the most spectacular - calderas on the planet. The world-famous Ngorongoro Crater is a designated World Heritage Site likened to Noah's Ark in its preservation of diversity.

You take a game drive down into the crater to witness an impressive assemblage of wildlife. The Crater is the permanent home of up to 30,000 larger animals, almost half of them being zebra and wildebeest. Animals resident within this vast intact ecosystem include lion, elephant, black rhino, warthog, hippo, buffalo and many plains herbivores such as wildebeest, Thomson's gazelle, zebra, eland and reedbuck.

Days 6-9
MAHALE MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK
On the morning of Day 6 you are flown to Mahale Mountains National Park which has been described as an earthly paradise. Dramatic emerald peaks and fine white sand lapped by the crystal clear waters of Lake Tanganyika make this an opulent and stunningly beautiful place. There are no roads for 60 miles.

Upon arrival at the airstrip you are met for a 1 ½ hour lake transfer (unless there is inclement weather) to camp in the "Isabella" - a beautiful 45-foot mahogany dhow. The camp is very exclusive and each of its seven elegant thatched open cottages are situated on the edge of the forest, facing the lake.

During your time here, track the chimpanzees in the stunning tropical rainforest with skilled guides and trackers. The tracking is concentrated on a group which has been habituated to human contact - sit amongst them only a few feet away. Chimp movements rely heavily on which trees are in bloom and they can move from a four-hour trek away to just behind camp in a day. After a days' "chimping", you may choose to fish from the Isabella, snorkel, swim or canoe.

Days 10-12
SELOUS GAME RESERVE
On Day 10 you are flown to the Selous Game Reserve and your lodge which is situated on the banks of the Rufiji River in the northern sector of the Reserve. Uniquely crafted from local materials to blend into the Selous landscape, each of the eight cottages has an attached bathroom and an open verandah providing an uninterrupted view of the Rufiji River and its wildlife.

The lodge is renowned for its walking safaris with an experienced armed guide. Game drives are conducted from specially-adapted open Land Rovers and can include a picnic or bush meal to maximize game viewing all day. The diverse ecosystems of the Selous support huge populations of elephant, buffalo, hippo and crocodile, as well as rare species such as wild dog, greater kudu, and sable antelope. Boat trips are also available on the Rufiji River where you float past pods of shiny hippos and sunbathing crocodiles.

Days 13-16
MNEMBA ISLAND
On the morning of Day 13 you fly to Zanzibar where you are met and driven to the boat which takes you to Mnemba Island. The lodge is situated on an exclusive island just 3 miles off the north-eastern tip of Zanzibar in the azure Indian Ocean. Mnemba is renowned as one of the most romantic ocean destinations in the world, offering a privacy and rustic exclusivity unparalleled on the African coastline.

The spectacular coral reefs surrounding Mnemba Island feature approximately 600 species of reef fish. The beaches provide a nesting place for endangered green turtles, and you can also see humpback whales (from July to September), three species of dolphin, whale sharks (the world's largest fish), and many types of migratory and resident shore birds. White coral-sand beaches and temperate turquoise water round out this intimate island paradise.

NOTE: This is just one example of many custom itineraries we can do for you in this diverse country.
